TIN CANNON BREWING COMPANY – Bobby’s Pale Ale (American Pale Ale)

  • 5.7% ABV
  • Another local (Virginia) beer from my Boston hook up. I would say I dont know why I have a dude from Boston bringing me beers from a brewery that is like 5 miles away from me, but I know why. I am lazy as shit. Thats it really, no excuse. What ever, I spend 8 hours a day doing his job for him because he is dumb as hell. He owes me, like sexual favors level of owe. I say that getting beer from him is a pretty good deal considering. What ever, onto the beer. I gotta say I like it. I have been drinking session IPA’s a lot lately and I forgot why I like Pale Ales, malts. Ya I know, normally I hate being able to taste them but this isnt like a stout. There is more malt than a session IPA but not enough to over power the hops. Ya, I like it.

Alpine Beer Company – Hoppy Birthday (American Pale Ale)

  • 5.25% ABV
  • Hoppy Birthday… theee he he… Get it? Its a joke son. Any way this is a pretty good APA that Alpine markets as a session ale. Either way I like it. Nothing super out of the ordinary, just a good ass session. I have said it before but I am running out of clever things to say about sessions so I am forced to end this here.

Union Craft Brewing – Duckpin (American Pale Ale)

  • 5.50% ABV
  • Kind of malty for a pale ale, not saying it is bad but it is not really in step with the current trend of hoppy pale ales. Well honestly the trend now is that everything is hoppy but that is a good thing because I like hops. Any way this is pretty good but like I said, I like the hops. It is pretty cool that it is brewed in Bodymore. It is nice to see something other than crime coming outa there.

Three Notch’d Brewing – The Ghost (American Pale Ale)

  • 5.10% ABV
  • APA’s are pretty much my favorite beer right now and this one is the reason why. You dont get retard levels of ABV but you do get that delicious hops punch in the nuts mouth. Lightly malted, just enough to know they are there but the focus is the hops. Three Notch’d is cranking out really good damn beers with this being a good example if you want to try something of theirs to try out.

Cigar City Brewing – GWAR Oderus Ale (American Pale Ale)

  • ? ABV
  • I am just going to say it, Cigar City is over rated. I know I will probably get death threats for that but it is true. I have had a couple of their beers now and the one I liked the most was only OK. That would be this one by the way. I dont know if it is their yeast but I think that most Cigar City beers taste a little sloppy. This one does not have a particularly  good hop flavor or a remarkable malt presence. It is all just kind of there…

Third Street Brewhouse – Three Way (American Pale Ale)

  • 5.20% ABV
  • Another session, and surprise, its good. This one has 3 hops and 3 malts, get it… A Three Way. Hah! The jokes are all over the place. One thing that isnt a joke, is this beer. It is pretty damn tasty. I cant place them but the malts in this thing are good. They take center stage over the hops but it isnt bothering me this time. They are really good.

Monocacy Brewing – H.L. Rex (American Pale Ale)

  • 3.60% ABV
  • I have to hand it to Monocacy, when they say they are making a session they really mean it. At 3.6% ABV you could drink these things all day long, which is either a good thing or bad depending at how you look at it. For me its a good thing, made even better by the fact that it tastes god damn awesome. It really isnt missing anything taste wise. Hops: yup. Malts: yup. Damn it, I really like this beer.

Stone Brewing – Pale Ale 2.0 (American Pale Ale)

  • 6.00% ABV
  • Now here is something that I dont ever really say about a Stone beer, it isnt very good. I loved the original Stone Pale Ale but this is new and updated. It is actually labeled as Pale Ale 2.0, which actually makes me pretty fucking angry. I work in a software development shop where we actually use versioning, you know, where it is needed to keep track of shit. I am fucking tired of people using it out of context, like human 2.0 or the lawnmower 3.2. I am actually pretty surprised that they didnt call it an iBeer or some shit. What ever, this beer used to be good and no it isnt. Maybe it is just me or maybe it is the fact that they used German hops in it but it isnt as good. I like it but the old version was better.

Green Man Brewery – Rambler Spring Ale (American Pale Ale)

  • 5.50% ABV
  • I have been drinking a lot of session IPA’s recently and that has lead to a sad neglect of new APA’s. And that is no longer a problem thanks to crazy Vermont dude, who in a delicious twist of fate went to North Carolina this time. Thanks man! Any who, this is a pretty good APA but I am not sure if it lives up to the hype another co-worker built it up to be. I dont mean its bad because, its not. But it isnt anything way out of the ordinary. I dunno… I like it.
