American Amber

Tin Cannon Brewing Company – Heart of the Lion (American Amber)

  • 5.60% ABV
  • Another beer from my Boston retard. Thanks dummy! I like this beer, and I have forgotten that I like amber’s. This is smooth and malty which I generally shy away from but it is really working well here. My only complaint is that there really is no head to it. I guess that might be because the growler is like a day or two old. Even with that I am enjoying it tho.

Apocalypse Ale Works – RED HOPPOCALYPSE (American Amber)

  • 8.00% ABV
  • Right off the bat there are two things going for this beer. The art on the can is worth buying on its own, also the brewer has a weird apocalypse thing going on. Whats not to love? Not being sarcastic. They are also from Virginia which is pretty cool too. All in all this beer has a lot going for it and there is only one problem, it isnt very good. I dont hate it but for the level of ABV I just wish it tasted better. It has the unfortunate curse of high ABV beers… Sweetness. I dont like it.

North Peak Brewing Company – Siren (American Amber)

  • 5.00% ABV
  • So I have 7 sisters in laws. 7! Most of them are completely awesome and I love them. As much as I love anything I love most of them. Thankfully they know how much I love beer. I guess I should say that my wife is from Detroit… So thanks to one of my awesome sisters I got a shit load of Michigan beers. Thank you Gina, seriously thank you. Mostly thank you because this beer is awesome. I really like Ambers and this is a really good example of one. It is malty, but not stupidly so. It has hops, but not at the level that overpowers. It is basically a perfect beer, that isnt an IPA. Everybody wishes they had sisters like mine.

Ithaca Beer Company – Cascazilla (American Amber)

  • 7.00% ABV
  • Another New York beer, how many of those did I buy? Not enough because this thing is great. Ithaca Beer is a REALLY good brewer which makes sense because it is Ithaca. Seriously, you should go there, it is fucking beautiful. I am thinking that this beer’s flavor is sensory representation of upstate New York. It tastes good??? OK, that didnt work. This beer is good. It reminds me (a tiny bit) of a Bastard. I dont know what it is but the amber part is Bastard-ish. Good stuff.

Maine Beer Company – Zoe (American Amber)

  • 7.20% ABV
  • Werd! An awesome Amber, that isnt something that happens every day. It isnt an IPA but it sure reminds me of one with a pronounced bitterness that isnt detracting from the malt taste that you expect from an Amber. Good lord this is a good beer. It has a heap of the normal American IPA hops in it but it is obvious that it is something different. Man this is good. Thanks Gary!

White Birch Brewing – Hop Session Ale (American Amber)

  • 5.10% ABV
  • Not horrible but it also isnt awesome. It would make for a really good session ale I you cant get your hands on Levitation or All Day. It is moderately bitter with a malt tastes that reminds me of some of my home brews. Kind of muddled tasting I guess. All in all it is worth the try but unless you cant find a Stone you could skip it.

New Belgium Brewing – Red Hoptober (American Amber)

  • 6.00% ABV
  • This is pretty god damned good which is odd for two reasons. 1: It is a New Belgium and 2: It is an Amber. I have had a couple of good Amber’s but on the whole I am not really a fan of the style. I hope that this doesn’t mean that this is so odd that it isn’t even close to the style but what ever… I like it.

Lost Coast Brewery – Alleycat Amber (American Amber)

  • 5.50% ABV
  • I generally dont like American Amber’s because they dont taste like very much me. I smoke a lot and I need a full on assault of the taste buds to feel anything in my mouth hole. That kind of puts most subtle beer styles in to place that I cant appreciate. This totally falls into that category, I think I like it but I cant really be sure.

Rogue Ales – St. Rogue Red (American Amber)

  • 5.10% ABV
  • This is a dry hopped amber and I got to say I am a little disappointed. The aromatics just arnt there. I can smell it but I just thought that after dry hopping I would get punched in the nose with delicious smells. On the plus side it is fucking amazing tasting. For real, I dont really like amber’s but this is really really good. It has enough hops to make up for the fact that is amber. Not to say it is an IPA ore a pale ale but they are there.

Rogue Ales – American Amber Ale (American Amber)

  • 5.60% ABV
  • Not bad. It is pretty smooth tasting and very representative of what I have come to expect an American Amber to taste like. I have had a lot of crazy ass ambers that while good were completely of the style. Not the case here, a well made and good tasting amber. My only complaint is that there isnt anything that stands out and makes me go “Holy Crap”.

Boston Beer Company – Tasman Red IPA (American Amber)

  • 6.75% ABV
  • There is something odd going on with the taste, it is good but not something I have tasted before. Ohhh, I just read the bottle and they used some weird Australian (duhhh…) hop in it. That kind of makes me sad because I was looking forward to trying it and my first taste is from a Sam Adams. Oh well, this is still pretty good if a little strange tasting. I would really like to try the hops in a beer from another brewer to get a better taste for it. It is has a more pronounced citrus/pine taste than I am used to and the smell will take some getting used to also. Every one should try it for the new hops alone.

On a side note, it is nice to see Sam Adams brewing something new and interesting that doesn’t completely suck ass. Now if they would just stop suing other brewers.

Flying Fish Brewing Company – Exit 9 (American Amber)

  • 9.00% ABV
  • Damn, at first taste I could only taste the alcohol in it and I got worried I was in for another 120 Minute style fiasco. I know it is only 9% and I shouldnt be able to taste it but it is there. I dont know, maybe it is one of the hops they used. Uhhh… The more I drink the less I like it. Something in here tastes like tannin.

Grand Lake Brewing Company – Rocky Mountain Red Ale (American Amber)

  • ?.?? ABV
  • First of just to be fair, American Amber’s are not my favorite beer’s. With that being said I can say that this is a pretty good amber. It has a good malt body with barely a hint of hops. The label on the bottle say’s that they use an English yeast and I wouldn’t argue, it has that taste to it. Pretty good but not my style so…
