Wormtown Brewing Company – Be Hoppy (American IPA)

  • 6.50% ABV
  • So this is really good. And very highly regarded, which is odd because I have never heard of the brewer before. I guess technically I shouldnt even be drinking it becuase… It is from Boston and the dont distribute to Virginia!!! Thanks again Gary, my North Eastern beer pipeline. Any who, this is a exceptional IPA that is just good and by that, I mean it doesnt have anything goofy brewed with it to make it NEW and DIFFERENT. It is just a good IPA.

The Fat Cat Beer Company – Confession IPA (American IPA)

  • 6.00% ABV%
  • This doesnt make me very happy. I dont know how they pulled it off but all I taste is that sickening sweetness. OK it isnt the sweetness but it is an overbearing malt taste that I think should never ever be in an IPA. I dont even know how this got classified as an IPA because, to me, this tastes more like a over hopped amber. Uhgghhg… I am un-happy that I have to finish this, but I guess the good news is that I am willing to finish it as opposed to pouring it out… Blah! This is a bad beer.
  • – Dont buy

Dark Horse Brewing Company – Crooked Tree IPA (IPA)

  • 6.50% ABV
  • Well this is pretty good. Good head with retention (that’s what she said). Good, I guess, citrus smell that I think is more on the very weak orange side of the house. That taste is pretty delish, not super hoppy but it is definitely an IPA. I guess what they are doing is just not going overboard on Columbus hops, or what ever, to push the IBU’s through the roof. It is a pretty complex, mostly delicious beer.

Finch’s Beer Company – Cut Throat (American Pale Ale)

  • 5.50% ABV
  • Meh, I recently made a comment that IPA’s are all starting to taste the same to me and this APA is pretty much in the same boat. It is good but there isnt anything that really stands out about it. I guess I shouldnt be bitching about that because it is good and that isnt always the case with the new beers I try. If you want a  good true to syle APA then this is for you.

Finch’s Beer Company – Threadless (American IPA)

  • 6.00% ABV
  • I am pretty sure I have become a jaded fuck by drinking so many damn IPA’s. I love them but damn I have had a ton of them and after a while they start to run together. Well good ones anyway and this is a good one. The problem, which isnt really a problem, is that it doesn’t stand out. It is good and is worth drinking but nothing really makes me take note of it.

Blue Point Brewing Company – Toxic Sludge (American Black Ale)

  • 7.00% ABV
  • Well it is good but… It isnt very IPAish and with only 40 IBU’s I guess that makes sense. Honestly I have to say it tastes more like an English IPA than an American. That isnt a bad thing but there is a certain something you expect when the label says it is a Black IPA and this falls a little short of that. If you ignore all of that noise this is a pretty good beer that I am enjoying.

Natty Greene’s Pub & Brewing Co. – Southern Pale Ale (American Pale Ale)

  • 5.30% ABV
  • This is a pretty good pale ale but I do take issue with the brewer. I dont know if it can be seen from the picture but there is a big ass “Taste the South” on  the label. Who the fuck is proud of the south? I mean I know I live Virginia but… I live in Northern Virginia. It might as well be New York.  What ever, this is a good beer.

White Birch Brewing – White Birch Saison (Saison)

  • 6.90% ABV
  • This is, in my experience, so far away from a saison that it isn’t even funny. If you think that a heartfelt embrace from a loved one and having Mike Tyson punch you in the throat are pretty much the same thing then yes, you would classify this as a saison. That being said I really like this beer. I just this it is more like a Flanders Red than anything else, and I know I am right because I had M1 try some and she ran to the sink and spit it out. She doesn’t like them very much hence the spitting while I on the other hand, love them. Love them. There isnt really much else to say about it because with sour beers I cant really taste any nuances, just the sour. Thanks for the beer Gary!
